When you get the call...answer with, "Terry!"

It’s that time of year when students begin calling all UGA alumni to update records, find out what is going on in the lives of alumni and importantly, ask for annual contributions to the Georgia Fund in support of university-wide initiatives. In the coming weeks, you can look forward to a UGA student calling you to ask for your annual donation.

This year, we invite you to DESIGNATE a portion of your gift to the Terry College of Business through the Terry Annual Fund. Your gift to the Terry College of Business is crucial to the strength of Terry’s future. By designating a portion of your gift you are directing money to the specific programs and departments that made an impact in your education and career.

Of course, any gift to the Terry Annual Fund is also a gift to the Georgia Fund—it is simply ear marked for the college you love. When designating your gift you will enjoy all of the society memberships and benefits that come along with a gift to the Terry Annual Fund, AS WELL as to the Georgia Fund. So when you get the call, answer with “Terry!”

Here are ways your annual dollars are hard at work at the Terry College of Business:

---------------------------------

148 gifts of $25 = $3,700

Helps one undergraduate student experience the Leonard Leadership Scholars program.

20 gifts of $250 = $5,000

Makes it possible for one student to study overseas.

12 gifts of $500 = $6,000

Affords the Music Business Program a promotional video to recruit the best future students and help secure jobs in the music industry for current students.

---------------------------------

As you can see, the collective impact of many gifts keeps this college strong. Of course, you can always make a gift by visiting www.terry.uga.edu/makeagift any time, but students look forward to speaking with you by phone soon! Don't forget to tell them all about what you have accomplished since your college days at Terry...you will encourage these undergraduate callers and we can even use your story to inspire students to come!

Terry Talks: A program of the Terry College Young Alumni Board

The purpose of Terry Talks is to connect younger alumni with alumni who have experienced successful careers in different areas of expertise. These events will serve to develop younger alumni and connect them with mentors in those professions in which they seek to do business.

What is Terry Talks?

Terry Talks programs are small events (15 people) for young alumni of the Terry College of Business. These events complement the larger gatherings hosted by the Young Alumni Board (YAB) each year.

Programs are industry focused. (Examples include Real Estate, Media and Marketing, Private Wealth Management and Finance.)

Where and when are Terry Talks?

Programs are hosted by Terry College alumni in their homes, offices, businesses or restaurants. Alumni hosts serve as the main “speaker” of the discussion and encourage participation in the conversation among all participants. Alumni hosts cover any expenses associated with the program.

What are people saying about Terry Talks?

“Hosting a TerryTalks event in my home was a great experience. It gave me an opportunity to meet a new generation of alumni interested in real estate and share with them my many years in the industry. In doing so, I felt a great sense of pride in giving back to the Terry College. It was minimal effort on my part as the Young Alumni Board handled many of the responsibilities. I encourage other alumni to consider helping the College and our fellow alumni in this way.” Joe Terrell, BBA 1974, Highgate Partners

How does a Terry alum participate in Terry Talks?

We’re looking for Terry College alumni hosts for our 2010-2011 Terry Talks programs. If you are a successful alum with interesting experience in your field, and you’re interested in working with young alumni, please contact YAB member Russ Johnson (BBA 2003) at russ.johnson@cox.com.

The benefits of participating in company match programs

Through corporate matching gift programs, cash gifts from a company's eligible employees are matched with company or corporate foundation funds. It all adds up to a great way to increase your contributions and receive more benefits at no additional cost to you!

They are generally made in a fixed ratio to the gifts of the employee, i.e., 1:1, 2:1, etc. on an annual basis. Recent statistics show approximately 50% of Fortune 500 companies have matching gift programs and 13% of companies match at 2 to 1.

For example, a young alumni can make a $500 gift with a $500 company match and viola! He or she is a member of the Dean's Circle and eligible for all Dean's Circle benefits. What’s not to love about that? Your gift grows, which then translates into even better opportunities for the Terry College…and all you have to do is turn in some paperwork!

We hope you will search the UGA matching gift database to see if your employer matches employee gifts. Keep in mind this list grows and changes frequently, so you might also want to check with your HR department for opportunities within your organization.

Participating in your company matching gift program is just another way to provide additional dollars to provide the resources and experiences that separate Terry students from the competition. To learn more about giving to Terry, visit the Terry Annual Fund website.

Class Gift Recognition at the Terry Graduation Convocation

We are so excited about the personal recognition you will receive for earning your degree at the upcoming Terry Graduation Convocation! I wanted to be sure you did not miss out on yet another recognition opportunity, nor the chance to give back to the college who is launching you into the next phase of your life.

By participating in the 2010 Terry Class Gift you will be given a "Terry Class Donor" pin to wear with your regalia. Also, the initiative and the reason for the buttons will be explained in the program and from the podium. There is no doubt people will be looking for your button, so don't miss out!

If you have not yet made your $15 gift to the 2010 Terry Class Gift effort you can:

  • Click here to make your gift today. (Click “other”then type $15 when prompted.) OR
  • Drop off your gift with Amber Hurdle, Director of Annual Giving in 278 Brooks Hall, along with the form found by clicking here. (Simply mark the $15 only option, fill out the rest of the form and turn it in!)

Here are some common questions asked about the 2010 Terry Class Gift:

Q: I made a gift to Senior Signature, does that count?

A: If you made a $50 gift to Senior Signature, then $35 was allocated to the Georgia Fund benefiting UGA as a whole and $15 was allocated for the Terry Annual Fund. In this case, your Terry Class Gift was made in conjunction with your Senior Signature gift.

However, if you made a $35 gift to Senior Signature, no monies were allocated specifically for the Terry College of Business. In this case, all you have to do is make a $15 gift to also participate in the Terry Class Gift.

Q: I made a pledge with my ILA, MBA or MAcc program. Will I still be recognized as a donor at the Terry Graduation Convocation?

A: YES! You will have a “Terry Class Gift Donor” button and will be recognized just the same.

We hope you will make this small investment in the college that has made an enormous investment in your future. Join countless alumni in becoming a Terry Annual Fund donor through your 2010 Terry Class Gift!

The Terry Investment

Donors don't give to institutions. They invest in ideas and people in whom they believe.”
- G.T. Smith

When you give to the Terry Annual Fund, you are investing in a tradition of excellence and a legacy of generosity. This generosity allows you to make an immediate difference within Terry College and help bridge the gap being created by shrinking state appropriations to higher education. Giving to the Terry Annual Fund also allows you to invest in the future. The generosity of earlier generations make tomorrow possible for younger generations. No matter the size of the gift, the Terry Annual Fund makes it possible for you to invest in the past, present, and future of Terry College and join together with alumni, faculty, staff, friends and parents to make Terry College one of the best.

Terry College greatly benefits from annual giving for many reasons. The great aspect of annul giving is that it is annual. That means that your gift to Terry College promotes stability within the college. Annual giving can be viewed as a stream that keeps Terry College running smoothly from day to day while providing consistency for future planning. Gifts to the annual fund enhance academics through unique learning experiences including new technologies and student activities. The goal of Terry College is to give students the best experience possible. Your donations to the Terry Annual Fund play a crucial role in enhancing that experience while providing deserving students with scholarships. The Terry Annual Fund also helps attract and retain outstanding faculty which is beneficial to the prestige and reputation of Terry College.

The truth is that Terry College depends on people, like you, to maintain an institution of excellence. Hopefully, if for no other reason, you decide to give simply because you love Terry College of Business and the University of Georgia. Investing in education is sure to last because you are investing directly into students and the future business and communities they will impact. So, take part in Terry’s legacy of generosity today and help make the future brighter.

It’s easy:

· Credit Card: Visa, MC, Disc, Amex

· Matching Gifts: Over 1,000 corporations match gifts made by employees, board members, retired employees, and spouses to their institution of choice. Matching gifts enable you to double or even triple your gift to Terry. Alumni and friends receive full recognition credit for gifts. Participation is simple. Check with your company's community relations or human resources office to see if they match. If they do, they will have gift forms for you to include with your gift to Terry.

· Gifts of Securities: Gifts of stock are increasingly becoming a vehicle of choice for Terry College supporters. Stock gifts are made through The Arch Foundation, the charitable organization that raises private monies for the school, using one of three methods: Broker to Broker Transfer, Direct Transfer to The Arch Foundation for Terry, or by Making A Gift Of Appreciated Securities.

And remember, EVERY gift counts, no matter the size.

It is the collective impact gift to the annual fund make that takes the Terry College from a solid state education to an exceptional business education offering nationally ranked programs. Won't you invest in that idea and make your gift today?

We'd love to hear why our Terry Annual Fund donors choose to give. Let us know by commenting!

Why it is more important than ever to say, “I am Terry!”

Happy New Years to our Terry Family! I thought this would be a great time of year to highlight some of the resources your Terry College offers to keep you competitive in today’s business world. But first, I’d like to share some of the news the Terry College of Business Selig Center for Economic Growth projects for the 2010 Georgia job market.

2010 Economic Outlook Luncheon Highlight

2009 was a tough year for many. However, there is some good news for 2010, according to what was reported by Dean Robert Sumichrast at the Georgia Economic Outlook Luncheon, hosted by the Terry College of Business Office of Executive Programs, in Atlanta.

“The period of heavy job losses is over, although some job losses will persist into early 2010," Sumichrast said. "Georgia will end up losing about 370,000 jobs over the course of this recession. That's more than twice as many jobs as we lost in the previous recession and represents about 9 percent of total employment." Even though job growth in Georgia will finally turn positive next spring, it will be too weak to keep pace with the number of people entering the job market. "Georgia's unemployment rate will continue to rise, topping out at more than 11 percent in mid-2010," said Sumichrast, who contrasted the double-digit benchmark with the more bearable 4.6 percent jobless rates of 2006 and 2007.

If the hope for more job openings interests you, while the “pace” concerns you…keep reading to find out how to tap into your Terry network! And if this tidbit from the EOL is not enough for your inquiring mind, you can attend an Economic Luncheon when the tour comes to your area. Click here for upcoming dates or to register or read the rest of this blog for a chance to win the entire forecast, with charts, on CD!

Terry/UGA Resources for Your Career Development

Even with the expected growth, there is no doubt it is still tough to find a job or even keep the one you have these days. Fortunately, being a part of the Terry network provides you with resources:

  • DAWGlink allows you to browse hundreds of positions specifically for UGA students and alumni all over the country.
  • Terry Boot Camp is tailored for Terry students, but is also open to alumni who want to “practice their pitch” for job fairs and interviews.
  • If you’ve been to the Terry Executive Education Center in Atlanta , then you can find Nicole Lechene, Director of Alumni Career Services, whose office is in the same building. Nicole can help you with a career assessment; career search strategy and action plan; resume and cover letter writing, interview preparation, and many other topics.
  • Network with fellow alumni at one of the many upcoming Terry Alumni Events. In a tough job market it is not always WHAT you know, but WHO you know. There is no doubt Terry students receive an exceptional education. The rankings speak for themselves. However, the power behind being part of the Terry family as an alum is the instant network you receive of successful and connected Terry graduates. So get out there and start developing and strengthening relationships with fellow Terry alumni!
  • · Terry Executive Programs offers business professionals value-added education with a high return on investment. In today's globally competitive market, being well-trained is essential to profitability and success.

Now, that’s quite a list of reasons to be proud to say, “I am Terry!”

We would love to know what tips you can offer those seeking employment or what obstacles you are facing in your job search. The first five alumni to leave a comment will receive a free copy of the 2010 Economic Outlook on CD. Right now these are only given to luncheon attendees and will only be sold after the tour is complete. Not only will you have a great wealth of information right on your computer, you will have plenty of *hot topics* to discuss at your next networking event!
